It’s great to look back and honor the genuine things that became epic, while keeping an eye out for the next. Enjoy the moments, as they are blessings.
This hit me right in the feels...
Mission accomplished!
Indeed. What’s it from?
@@solomani-42 I guess it's just the way we're wired lol
They should just implement a team finder or something. Yeah, you lose the social part about forming the party up and all that... but if you think about it you can still be social with that feature because after you have a party... boom you can start being social lol. Yeah, it was part of the old schools methods was cool back then, it was just part of the experience. For maps, it was cool because back then an mmo was new to everyone, so the mystery of not knowing what was out there was awesome. With today's modern take, if no maps are made, they will always be fan made by someone else. Back then maybe we would draw out a map on paper lol, our own custom part of the game we had to do. But yeah someone else does that for us now in all cases. Just wanted to vent some things about modern vs old school.
They have LFG.
The problem with nostalgia is you cannot go back and time and place are so important. I wish we could have recorded our games like we can now, I remember there being Fraps in like 2003 but it took up so much space everything got deleted. What we didn't realise at the time was it could have been so important to capture everything so people can make emulated servers more spot on. I have a soft spot for EQ2 in it's 2004/05 form, but if you went back to it now no one would understand, however it really was an MMO with the graphics of HL2 in an age where that never happened. I mean the art was dog crap in a lot of places and the engine aged poorly, and so when people look at it now that's all they see, but back then in all the previews it look AMAZING!
I recorded some of my time to VHS. Finding the tape and getting a VCR that isn't north of $200 is the problem though lol.
@@EQOAnostalgia I had so much uploaded to that old site putfile as RUclips wasn't a thing, but that site shut down with it all gone and I only have screenshots left on Giantbomb, but they banned me like a decade ago so it's all gone now.
@@RIPSOE404 I noticed the EQOA Revival Wiki is missing a ton of stuff now too, images, maps etc all gone over the past few months. Seems the guy hosting it changed the code then malware hit it, he got sick and nobody has fixed it since. I'm told we have an offline version of it but it was a pretty massive treasure trove of spell icons, mob images etc.
@@EQOAnostalgia Makes me realise why developers never want to get involved in stuff like this. There will be people that kept so much data from when they developed it as I keep everything I do at worked secretly backed up. However why would they risk their reputation when it usually goes tits up with these emu servers? Though I have a suspicion that some of them probably have past developers working on them like I bet some of the SWG ones do and Project 1999.
Super easy to find a group.
Only way to really quench your nostalgia is to jump in a time machine. No matter how much you go back to those nostalgic things now in the present time, its never the same.. sadly. This was a cool edit btw 👍
A painful realization for a lot of us. Also thanks!
And in some cases you would need to remove it entirely from your mind to experience it again for the first time.
I am going to check this out. I would really love to customise the arcade layout and machine placement, like a fighting game floor, a brawler floor, a shooter floor, etc. Does the ambient sound of all the attract modes mingle in an authentic way, or is each cabinet's audio isolated to its immediate vicinity? I don't have a functioning VR headset for PC right now, is there an option to run this on a standard display as a standard first-person experience?
You can't move anything around but the ambient sounds for attract mode work as you would expect. Sometimes i just stand around in there and soak it in. You can't play without VR. EMUvr has some cool stuff going on that i'm looking into now though.
I recently discovered your channel and have really been enjoying it. We are from the same era and clearly prone to nostalgia for the same games and cinema. Thanks for introducing me to this awesome project! I am curious to see what new customisation options are now available since we are now over 2 years on from when you created this video.
I don't think the main dev continued to develop EMUvr, but since it's open source people have made their own custom rooms with props. We recently just got several floors of arcades seemingly. I'm looking into that now. Might have a video up on it.
I’m enjoying the game, but my expectations are low. They’ll cave, trying to make everyone happy and the game will be an adventure-less pushover with maps, mounts, ports, box accounts, bots, bonus xp events, etc. there will never be another old school eq :(
M&M will never cave, of that i'm positive. But we'll see what VR does with this game over time. The calls to casualize it are increasing, and my video talking about it had A LOT of downvotes because i dared to point it out.
@@EQOAnostalgia I enjoyed the video. Hopefully I’m wrong in my doubts.
Their is vs eq first days.. I mean I can look for couple hours on a full red server that when I join people are already leaving or 30 minutes in leaving to camp..
I haven’t been able play enough to get the feel for this yet so not sure, but had something to bring up slightly off topic that you may agree with as it relates to eqoa. I wish when we are cycling through mobs that we could get a colored ring indicating level and get an idea of threat like we did in eqoa instead of having to actually hit “C” to consider. That extra step just seems clumsy. Admittedly I am very novice when it comes to mouse and kb, but this seems like it would be easy to implement and would be great to be able to utilize while traveling or soloing. They could even still incorporate using C to consider to get more details on the mob targeted, but would be nice to just have a very general, easy idea about a mob. Also helps picking out camps and such. Anyways wondering what you thought. I suggested on one of Joppas videos but wasn’t during live stream and never addressed
I agree, this is the kind of QoL i support. Minor, not game changing, but nice. I always hated having to press C to consider mobs post EQOA when i got into EQ1 and now M&M and Pantheon.
@ Exactly what I was kinda thinking. Nothing major but if you are just killing mobs at low levels or just considering an area to run to and explore it just makes it easy at a glance to get approximate level without hitting C. I’m guessing for most this is just second nature, but it really was nice having this in eqoa and by no means is it game breaking. I think it would just make the gameplay and UI just a small bit smoother. I’m sure I’ll get used to it but was kinda just putting it out there cause would be so easy to do
@@EQOAnostalgia My other wish would be to have an mmo have their Rez spells and capabilities work like eqoa, but I do get that would not be corpse run friendly. I suppose there are a lot of things I loved about the first mmorpg I ever played though
I've been a full time EQ2 player for a few years now on a TLE and I have had more groups in the past two weeks on Pantheon than I have in the past four months on EQ lol. I see people looking for more all of the time in Pantheon.
I wanted to hop into that but was strapped for cash pretty hard lol. Oldschool EQ2 was a lot better than what it turned into post getting WHOOPED by WoW.
I hear what you saying about Rose tinted goggles, but i don't agree it's as much of an issue as you do. I too remember the old days and the socialization and i miss that today, i spend a good amount of time looking for just that. But I'm aware of how often things can blow up with drama and such, that's part of the beauty of it. Things are so much more fun and engaging when people care enough about their hobby to have drama in it. I'm not aiming for it but the great environment we used to enjoy kind of requires that kind environment where that is possible. Yes we can't be 14 again but that doesn't mean we can't have similar experiences if people are open to it. We are all child monkeys at heart but being an adult makes it harder to get into the same headspace where you can be that invested in your hobby.
I don't think it's a big issue. But it's a thing, and worth discussion. Some people think they do, but they don't was basically my point being directed at that specific post.
@@EQOAnostalgia ah gotcha, ya to that person specifically ya I think I'm with you.
Need to merge servers. I feel it's not doing very well. Even the RUclips videos have very few views. I have 33 shaman and I still struggle to find groups. Sever says full but there ain't many people in town either. Strange. Lots of functions need to be added.
I think that would be a VERY bad idea. It's already packed on most servers. At 33 you're basically in the top 100 elites lol. Definitely need more time to cook though, it's EA after all.
@EQOAnostalgia 3000 players on atm. Across like 15 servers.
@@asdfasdfasdf4746 I mean 200-300 a server in a world like a 1/20th the size of classic EQ sounds about right for being "packed."
@@asdfasdfasdf4746 3k on steam at that moment you posted. Steam maxed out over 6.5k last i checked and many of us play on the official client. The game has at least 8-10k players. Like Tom said, it's a very small world atm. Merging would be very bad.
You've gotta level up your social status. I play a Shaman currently at 26. Grouping was tough at times so I have my solo plans while I just sit in LFG since SOMEBODY is going to need a healer. Overtime when you get better gear, and people see you as a competent healer you get invited faster. Eventually I barely have to try because people from several guilds know me and know I am a good healer so I get invites just from being online.

honestly, i can't speak for anyones personal experience, but i think this ones worth sticking around and seeing where it goes. people are just too afraid to stick their necks out anymore. but you should try, it's not that bad and if it goes bad... just run away xD But chances are you will like at least one person from your group and all it takes is "hey thanks, feel free to add me if you need a good X" and if you actually don't suck xD you might get an add. If you are a tank the chances are obviously much higher than if you are like a poopy melee that dies all the time. Be stand out, speak in group, be silly and positive. People need that.
The lantern middle-ground idea is so damn cool, it could almost be a trademark of the game.
WoW in a way ruined the genre of gaming. Everyone wants to min max now. Tanking and healing is a thankless job. People are toxic
Facts
@@EQOAnostalgia When I returned to WoW Classic, while I was playing during the TBC era, I once got chewed out by a guild leader for like 15m because he didn't like where I was standing on Gruul. A boss that we one shot mind you. According to the same BS metrics website they used I was the 9th best healer on my server, and we were doing easy content. Needless to say I left that guild that night, and quit the game two weeks later. I just don't have the patience for annoying people like I did 20 years ago. I'd rather just chill with friends and invite the occasional pug person is is nearby doing the same things.
@@tomwalker8944 I avoid all sweaty try hard at all costs. If i see someone sperging out over anything i just dip tf out lol. At 42 i don't have time for manbaby bs. It's a video game. So i don't blame you.
Hey you've teased a video a few months ago about what made gameplay and combat in EQOA really top notch compared to other MMOs. When is that video coming out?
Good memory. After my falling out with a couple of the Sandstorm devs and small % of the community, that went into hiatus unfortunately.
@@EQOAnostalgia Are the LFG podcast folk a different team?
@@thomaseubank1503 Yes, they are the original devs. I'm waiting on their EQOAemu server. But it's taking a long time.
Great video, keep'em coming - Myself is antisocial as ... ,born with it, you know autistik old fart with social fobia ..hahah (for real) ..But i really like Pantheon as it is and don't see grouping as a problem. I don't have a static group that i play with 'cause i don't have friends, but when i have time and really feel for it i login and get into a group in ~30 minutes, chatting and having fun just like the old good times in Vanilla Wow ~2004. What i wanted to say with that is, i don't understand (well, i do ..but :D) how people can complain about the grouping when even someone like me can stand behind that system and like it.
Very well said. If we introverts can find groups anyone should be able.
Game is fun, but the server I am on sux! the people here dont want to group or have already established their cliques. Fuck people sometimes.
I hear ya lol.
With smaller server populations limits, eventually you will learn more about the people you play with and create friendships, allies, enemies, etc..
Oh definitely.
2:56 part of the fun of an MMO, is being out in the world, exploring, discovering, the danger, meeting people, travelling to the dungeon. Not pushing a button and going straight to it. Blizzard is such trash.
It's true. Though i do still enjoy me some Vanilla WoW.
I call it ability whack a mole
lol
I believe the issue will work itself out when the world is complete. Not sure if you were there when Project 1999 blue and green or Project Quarm launched but it was the same deal- The original EQ continent just cannot handle the amount of players that logged on at launch and the current state of Pantheon is the same- There just aren't enough camps to hold the insane amount of players jammed into a few zones.
Facts. Also no i wasn't there for Quarm. I couldn't get into it despite trying.
@@EQOAnostalgia You didn't miss much. I was all in on Quarm for almost a year. Secrets just kept changing things and handing out free XP and loot. It made everything I accomplished feel like I wasted my time. :/
@@tomwalker8944 Dang, that sucks.
Oddly after watching 10 mins of this im more excited than watching hours of Pantheon
Honestly... yeah lol. Something about this game. I enjoyed it more than both Pantheon and M&M. I came into it thinking "Idk I'm kinda over MC graphics"
@EQOAnostalgia I can see that. I would never have considered it with those graphics but after watching you can tell it has that old eq vibes for sure.
the problem with grouping in this game is not the difficulty its the retail Andy's trying to play this game like WOW when its not. The average player doesn't even play the game correctly They wont Gap or Expose, They wont DEBUFF they just try and "NUKE" the boss. I have had rogues tell me they dont debuff cause they are a NUKE class. I have had Shamans refuse to heal cause they are DPS classes. They build group comp wrongs. They think Shamans sucks cause cleric shield when Shamans have highest healing output in game and best OS buttons. PPL argue cause why group when u can go solo. This game is starting to turn to crap not because the game is bad, but because the community is TOXIC. WoW mentality has RUINED MMORPGs
"Retail Andy's need love too Craig!" In all seriousness... such people will filter out if they refuse to learn. It's hilarious that a Shaman thinks they are a DPS class though. As a Shaman main we have two primary objectives in combat. Heal, debuff. That's about it, if the group is doing well enough and the tank isn't paper we can substitute with DoTs etc. We definitely have an issue with modern MMO fans coming into the game and bringing their own rules. The last video i made talking about how an influx of newbs are trying to casualize the game has THE MOST downvotes out of any of my content for the past year or two lol. Because it's 100% the truth.
@@EQOAnostalgia I just think the issue is there is too much soloable content. In EQ every mob was a group mob. :P
Subscribed for cats...I have 2. One likes to kneed on his sucky blanket on top of me and the other likes blanket forts. I'm a 48 old man and I'm the weakest link for cats 🤣
Cats are awesome. In all my life I've never been without a cat.
Cold calling people on the /who page and making a short list of people you consistently group with has worked for me. Don't wait for people to respond. Seek them out and watch as the amount of groups you engage with goes through the roof.
This is the way.
I have literally been kicked out of a group in Pantheon for communicating. Like what we should be targeting, etc. I was in shock. Wasn't rude, just jotted down the tools name who did it and will be sure to block them once the option is available. I've had way more positive group experiences that outweigh that though...when I can find a group. Definitely need some better options for quickly putting a group together without turning into WoW's just port everyone to the same dungeon. That makes the world feel insignificant.
Harsh. Some people don't like to have their leadership questioned i guess lol. Intead of saying something they just boot you.
Its important to remember that back in late 90s, early 2000s, MMORPGs were niche hobbies. People openly accepted the idea of meeting new people forming friendships, guilds and groups and actively looked for other people to play with. These days, Clans and Guilds follow each other from game to game with a well established relationships and lean on that first to accomplish whatever they set out to do in a new game(learn mechanics, experience and explore content etc.) Edit: I come from a EQ release and P99 background. I actively search and form groups in Pantheon. Another strategy I use is actively sending tells to players that are flagged as grouped. Maybe they are just duoing and you can spark conversation about doing something bigger, like a dungeon crawl or named camp. Suddenly you have 3 people and now your half way to a full group.
This is the way.
I dunno maybe it's just me but I enjoy the lfg and the current social aspect of the game is perfect. I play on the biggest server on east coast black moon and I've been saving the bitchy player names or just the straight ass players names. I've only ran across one of them that has made it past lv15. So imo the game it self runs off the people that the games not meant for ya know. I see this game even when 1.0 releases only having around 10,000 gamers steadily. And it will fluctuate a little more a little less but I like the game just not being what everyone wants to play ya know.
The Great Sperg Filter!
The time invest in LFG as a DPS is even higher with those Matchmaking systems than if you form the group yourself most of the time. It is short for healers and tanks but not for DPS. And to be honest, i prefer form It myself and invite exactly what i want than some random guy Who doesn't even say Hello
Two things in life i've learned. Never ask how sausages are made, and never accept random group or guild invites.
I also noticed even if you find a real group EXP is lack luster at best.
It is, i aim to talk about that more in the future.
It's not that bad though. And I say to myself when I play Pantheon: You are not here to reach the next level quickly, you are here to enjoy the journey.
@@EQOAnostalgia Yeah I'd say that's my biggest issue. Every time I group my xp goes through the floor compared to just grinding solo. Grouping feels like it's just for loot at times.
Ride the wave. Game may really be taking off now, maybe its not. I have three accounts and the first toon is 30+. LFG pugs the whole way. Good and bad experiences but you take what you can get and you keep playing if you're having fun.
WOW 30+? That's impressive.
Even in original EQ it was hard to group depending on your class. One of the reasons my wife started playing was because she felt sorry for me waiting around for a group for hours on end (I was a warrior and she would login to play my tank when I wasn’t around and putter around lower level zones). She created a cleric and after that we got groups (and raids) all the time. But, I only got a group because they wanted the cleric and my wife (gf then) would say we were a package deal. Was also a lot easier to build a group.
This is basically how my gf at the time, now wife also did things in EQOA lol. She tanked I healed or she would heal or tank and i ran DPS.
@ nice. 😊
I think this is why games like WoW implemented que systems for grouping. You choose a role to fill that fits your class, and the game matches you with other people to make a party. Was it better back in the day? Not really. Most people remember it differently, but it took forever to form parties and wait for everyone and then had limited time to do the dungeon you were going to. The que system streamlined it to save time. I didn't mind it.
It did, but the culture changed with it, people stopped talking and dungeons were made into short instanced affairs. It was a trade off.
@@EQOAnostalgia I think most people have just changed so much that they have a hard time dedicating more than an hour or two to any one thing. They all have an extremely short attention span. At my home gaming sessions, it used to be we would get together 1 or 2 days a week for 6-10 hours each. It has degraded over time. I now have a few guys that come over one night on the weekend for a few hours. My old RP group kept declining to where we were only getting together once every couple of months. I told them that we had to play at least once every other week for at least 8 hours, 6 if back to back weekends or I was done. I haven't heard from them in years since convid. They want nothing to do with me because I didn't believe the government narrative and I don't get vaccinations, since 1990. I almost never get sick, and when I do it's usually very mild and fixed by over the counter meds in a few days. Even convid I supposedly had once for about 6 hours. But whatever.
@@hueysimon2726 Yeah our attention spans are... shot. Overstimulation to the max lol. That stinks about the whole 2020 thing and how much it broke people up. I was here on YT exposing it and lost subs, got called a "Bad Christian" etc, because i was 100% opposed to it and exposing the bs. there just isn't enough people to group, i tanked for a while and it was either 1 group going and no need for another tank or it was the weekends and the groups were all begging you to leave your current group. if you play at the right times its fine but if you dont its a drag

I still think Guild Halls is what killed EQ1. Some may say the plane of knowledge did it, but at least people still gathered up and buffed each other there. Guild halls? Everyone is locked away out of public view. The cities are all ghost towns.
Interesting i had no idea... sounds like WoW with Warlords and Garrisons.
The culture really has changed. Socializing online in the 90s or 2000s was awesome. Socializing now? Horrible... Not just because of politics, but bad attitudes in general. BTW, I hear that rockin' PSO lobby music. lol
Facts! That's a good point, the way people behave has changed. It's NOT just the politics, i wish i would have touched on that. It's very true. Society is conditioned a certain way. A lot of people have to 100% agree with you are they want nothing to do with you. I've seen it a lot in my comments over the years, especially when i post the occasional religious video or historical one.
Back in my EQ2 days, playing as a Warden, I dealt with a Tank once who blamed me on his own failures. I was spamming heals on him constantly and I watched as his health bar plummeted like a boulder in a lake. But somehow it was my fault. My guess is he never applied his AAs correctly or was wearing junk armor. I'm just a Ratonga, what am I to do about that? lol
Lol healy Rat FTW! I've healed for so many paper tanks and it really drags the group down when the healer is OOM every, or every other pull.
I do miss the old eqoa, the grouping and just chilling and talking, made a lot of good friends, I tried WOW, the game is fun but the grouping sucks! like you said you rush through dungeons almost no talking, but that's what's nice about memories, you always have those, some people never had that experience of EQOA.
I feel bad for people who grew up always having internet. They missed out on a really awesome time. Same with MMO fans who never tried EQOA as you said. Lightning in a bottle really.

Well TOO BAD! You're getting one mister! lol. JK. It won't have GPS on it so that's cool.
Maps are fine but not needed. It's more emmersive and even dangerous to explore. Love it.
@@jessemclay3741 We used to print our maps up for EQOA, and that's only after we had player created maps months in. It felt like a real adventure where i had to navigate in a IRL minigame lol. It was epic!
I have 111hrs, been grouping a lot, most dont pan out whether someone isnt playing the class correctly and everyone leaves, or rl issues happen and once one person leaves most of the time the group gets disbanded. The level of difficulty and losing a level puts a lot more risk into grouping because you dont know if you can trust others well enough to play good enough to prevent death. The other side, its been great meeting people who have played eq or like eq mmos. I personally have been having a blast. After a few groups and being a more social person having a funny character name helps break the mold, i enjoy making people laugh and carrying on where the experience of grouping becomes way better and time ends up flying next thing you know its hours later, youve forgotten what level you were. You're just killing stuff with people who end up on your friends list, asking you to group with them the moment you log on and thats what i love about old school mmos. Pantheon is honestly filling that void of old eqoa and idc what age i am, i still have fun and being immature sometimes if i know it'll warrent me a laugh or two. All in all, my experience has been great, im glad i finally get to play this long awaited game and even though its such in an early state, I can easily see myself putting in 1000hrs over the course of this year.
This is the way
Very cool to hear.
I have a guild. I have friends who play. I have a lvl 16 monk. I sat there one evening lfg spamming chat for 3 hours. Then logged off. Pretty sure anyone who has done that knows it is the opposite of fun.
That's a pretty high level atm, most people are rolling alts by 12 or so sadly lol. I hear a lot of classes only have abilities up to around that level or lower 20's.
even pantheon combat is too fast paced to communicate by typing in the middle of combat, I enjoy pantheon, but I was hoping for something at the pace of FFxi where it was possible to communicate mid battle without a voice over ip program.
I think it's just right but that's the thing, you'll never please everyone 100%
voip makes mmos better
In the guild we use Discord to communicate by voice, it helps a ton, outside of the guild with rando groups, I have some Macros created to say things like /group Heal damn it heal!. Or /group Assist the tank! /group Stop attacking the rooted mob! etc...
I think that people forget that even in EQ there wasn't a lot of time to type for some classes/roles. Enchanters, Bards, charming Druids/Necros, anyone pulling often didn't get to talk much. I do wish there was more down time in Pantheon between fights though.
@@tomwalker8944 Yeah in EQOA i didn't have a ton of time to socialize. Usually only when medding. As a Druid i remember people dying once or twice when i was chatty and somewhat new, so i learned to shut up and focus lol. EQOA was faster paced though.
